What is skin food?
From the nutrients in your skincare through to fatty acids, what you put on your skin acts as “food” for your skin.
Our skin absorbs substances through its outer layer, called the stratum corneum, which is made up of dead skin cells. While the skin acts as a barrier, certain small, lipid-soluble molecules can penetrate it.
When you apply products like lotions or medications, they often contain ingredients designed to help them pass through the skin.
So, what are the different types of skin food?
- Nutrients: Many skincare products contain vitamins (like vitamins C and E), minerals, and antioxidants that nourish the skin and promote cell health.
- Moisturisation: Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and oils help retain moisture, which is essential for maintaining healthy skin.
- Fatty Acids: Essential fatty acids found in oils (like jojoba or avocado oil) help restore the skin’s barrier, keeping it hydrated and protected.
- Exfoliation: Ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) remove dead skin cells, allowing new, healthier skin to surface.
- Healing Properties: Certain ingredients, like aloe vera and honey, have healing and anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and repair the skin.
- Microbiome Support: Some products contain prebiotics or probiotics that help maintain a healthy skin microbiome, which can improve overall skin health.
By providing these elements, topical products can help enhance the skin’s appearance and function, much like food nourishes the body.
Organic Ingredients for Optimal Hair Health
Discover the benefits of using organic, natural oils in your hair care routine! In our workshop, you’ll explore how each of these oils nourishes, protects, and strengthens hair, avoiding the chemicals found in many conventional products. You’ll be able to select from a range of organic oils, each offering unique benefits tailored to different hair types and needs.
- Coconut Oil (UV Rating: 8)
Known for its rich moisturising properties, coconut oil deeply penetrates the hair shaft, repairing dry, damaged strands while adding shine. It also offers light UV protection, making it ideal for summer hair care. - Avocado Oil (UV Rating: 15)
Loaded with essential fatty acids, avocado oil helps strengthen hair and promote growth. It’s especially beneficial for coarse or curly hair, providing a protective layer against sun exposure with a moderate UV shield. - Almond Oil (UV Rating: 5)
Almond oil nourishes the scalp and softens hair, improving manageability and shine. With a gentle UV protection factor, it’s great for daily use, especially for those seeking to restore natural luster. - Carrot Seed Oil (UV Rating: 40)
This powerhouse oil is packed with antioxidants and has one of the highest natural UV ratings. It’s ideal for protecting hair from sun damage, keeping it healthy, and is perfect for those with colour-treated or fine hair. - Raspberry Seed Oil (UV Rating: 50)
Raspberry seed oil offers intense UV protection alongside omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that hydrate and fortify hair. It’s an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts seeking maximum sun protection. - Macadamia Oil (UV Rating: 6)
With lightweight, moisturising properties, macadamia oil helps control frizz and smooths hair while offering moderate UV defence. It’s perfect for maintaining balance in normal to dry hair.
Each of these oils provides natural, organic benefits to enhance your hair’s health and resilience, making them ideal additions to any nourishing hair care routine.
