I’m excited to share some tips and insights on caring for kids with curly hair. Recently, I noticed a mum on social media asking for advice on how to care for her daughter’s curly hair. Some of the suggestions were a bit worrying, especially when you consider that many mainstream hair products are filled with chemicals that can be harmful to children. These toxins can be absorbed through the scalp and may lead to symptoms such as behavioural changes, headaches, or even nausea.

Growing up, my mother didn’t know much about curly hair care, which led to me rocking a mullet for most of my childhood! Yes, those primary school years were a challenge. However, as I grew older, I began to learn about the unique needs of curly hair. One thing became clear: curly hair loves moisture, and it hates anything that strips it away. Now that my daughter, a toddler, has developed some well-defined ringlets of her own, it’s time for me to pass on that knowledge to her.

Some mornings, her curls are dry and wild, but with the right routine, they transform into soft, defined ringlets every time. Before diving into my go-to method, let’s talk a bit about why curly hair tends to be dry and unruly. The natural oils from the scalp don’t travel as easily along curly strands as they do with straight or wavy hair. This means curls need more moisture and a routine designed to lock it in. Many commercial shampoos and conditioners, especially those with silicones and fillers, can actually make things worse by stripping away much-needed hydration.

My Method for Gorgeous, Tangle-Free Curls

I use this method on both my daughter’s hair and my own, and it works like a charm every time. Whether it’s the start of a new day or we’re getting ready to head out, these steps ensure well-defined curls.

  1. Whether her hair is dry or slightly wet, I start by applying a pea-sized amount (I use more for my daughter) of Naturally COS Hair Boost and Shine Conditioner to my palm.
  2. I add about a teaspoon of water to dilute it slightly.
  3. Rub my hands together to mix.
  4. Then, I apply it to her hair, focusing on the mids to ends first, and then moving up to the top.
  5. At this point, her hair should be damp, but not drenched.
  6. Using both hands, I gently finger-comb the conditioner through her hair.
  7. Finally, I like to finger curl the ends, especially around the ponytail area, to ensure the moisture is absorbed.

Once dry, her hair naturally separates into beautiful, bouncy ringlets. I NEVER brush her hair, as that would ruin her curls. Instead, we only finger-comb, which allows us to gently remove knots while keeping her curls intact.

The Role of the Right Products

When it comes to curly hair care, choosing the right products makes all the difference. That’s why I rely on Naturally COS products like our Intense Hydrating and Clarifying Shampoo and Hair Boost and Shine Conditioner.

Intense Hydrating and Clarifying Shampoo is specifically designed for curly hair, which tends to be dry and prone to damage. Our no-poo formula gently cleanses while preserving your curls’ natural oils. This shampoo is free from toxins, chemicals, silicones, and sulphates, making it safe for both kids and adults. Key ingredients like rosemary leaf extract, ginger, and aloe vera help to control excess oil, stimulate healthy hair growth, and reduce scalp buildup, leaving hair hydrated and refreshed.

For an extra boost of hydration and shine, I follow up with our Hair Boost and Shine Conditioner. This nourishing conditioner is packed with organic argan oil, shea butter, and aloe vera, which work together to strengthen hair, lock in moisture, and add a healthy shine. It’s the perfect remedy for preventing breakage, split ends, and frizz, while also protecting curls from environmental damage.

Both products are safe for all hair types but work particularly well for curly hair because they promote hydration and strengthen the hair shaft.

A Final Note on Curl Care

Caring for curly hair requires patience, understanding, and, most importantly, the right products. I’ve found that my method works beautifully on my daughter’s hair, but it’s only because I’ve learned what curly hair really needs: moisture, gentleness, and natural, non-toxic ingredients.

For those looking to embrace their child’s natural curls, remember that it’s all about building a routine that supports their hair’s unique structure. Start early, teach them how to care for their curls, and always use products that nourish rather than strip away moisture.
